ANSI ASSP A10.37 establishes safety requirements for the design, selection, installation and use of debris net systems during construction, demolition operations and for the temporary containment of debris from deteriorating structures.
1.2 Purpose. The purpose of ANSI ASSP A10.37 is to provide the criteria for debris net selection and use and to provide design, test and installation requirements for debris nets.
1.3 Exceptions. For cases of practical difficulty and unnecessary hardship, or where other extenuating circumstances exist, the competent person may grant exception to the literal requirements of this standard and permit alternate methods, but only when it is clearly evident that equivalent safeguards are being provided.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 Construction Project. Any activity involving the construction, alteration, maintenance or repair of a structure.
2.2 Demolition Project. Any activity involving the demolition of an existing structure.
2.3 Competent Person. One who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are hazardous or dangerous to employees and the public and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate or control them.
2.4 Synthetic Fibers. A fiber produced artificially by manufacturing processes, such as nylon, polypropylene or polyester.
2.5 Personnel Net. A net which is designed, tested and installed in accordance with ANSI/ASSE A1O.11 for personnel fall protection.
2.6 Debris Net. A net which is designed, tested and installed in accordance with this standard to catch or contain debris only.
2.7 Horizontal Debris Net. A debris net which is installed in a horizontal or near horizontal plane. Refer to 3.1 for special considerations.
2.8 Vertical Debris Net. A debris net which is installed in a vertical or near vertical plane.
2.9 Public. All persons or property not associated with the project including jobsite visitors who are not employed by the owner or contractors.
2.10 Rated Load. The manufacturer’s rated working load.
2.11 User. The person or persons having care, custody or control of the equipment at the installation.

3.1 Whenever a debris net is installed horizontally and personnel are working above, then the net and supports and the installation shall conform in all respects to the requirements of ANSI/ASSE A1O.1 1 for personnel nets.
3.2 A competent person shall inspect each construction and demolition project, and deteriorating structure, where the
potential for falling debris exists and threatens persons or property. Using Section 5, “Debris Net Selection”, the competent person shall determine the proper type of debris net system(s) required to provide protection for persons and property below.
