CSA ANSI Z21.98 applies to newly produced non- metallic dip tubes intended for use in water heat ers.
Compliance of a dip tube with this Standard does not imply that such dip tube is acceptable for use in water heaters without supplemental tests with the dip tube installed in the particular water
heater design. .
This standard contains SI (Metric) corresponding to the yard/ pound quantities, the purpose being to allow the Standard to be used in SI (Metric) units. (American National Standard for Metric
Practice, IEEE/ASTM SI 10,or ISO 80000- 1:2009,Quantities and unit:
Part 1: General, 13 used 13 a guide in making metric converslon from yard pound quantities.) If 1 value for 1 measurement and a corresponding value 1n other units are stated, the first stated value 13 to be regarded 13 the requir ement. The given corresponding value may be approximate. If 1 value for 1 measurement and a corresponding value in other units are both specified as a quoted marking requirement, the first stated unit,or both, are to be provided.
In this St andard,“ shall”is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user shall satisfy in order to comply writh the standard: “ should”is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and
used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of CSA ANSI Z21.98.
Notes acompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or inf ormative material.

3 Definitions
The following definitions shall apply in this Standard:
Dip tube — a tube fitted into a water heater to direct incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank.
4 Construction
4.1 General
4.1.1
Dip tubes shall be provided with an anti-siphoning hole located such that, when the dip tube is installed, the hole shall be within 6 in (152 mm) of the top of the tank. The anti-siphoning hole shall have a minimum Y8 in (3.18 mm) diameter or equivalent.
t 4.1.2
Non-metallic dip tubes shall be accompanied by evidence, acceptable to the testing agency, that the material is suitable for the service, particularly with respect to toxicity, solubility, brittleness, temperature limits, etc.
Evidence of current certification under NSF International Standard for Plastics Piping System
Components and Related Materials, ANSI/NSF 14, or Drinking Water System Components — Health
Effect, ANSI/NSF 61, with appropriate end use shall be deemed acceptable with respect to toxicity.
4.1.3
A minimum of 12 samples of each type of dip tube shall be submitted for test.
4.2 Marking
t 4.2.1
Marking material shall be identified by class number and shall meet the following specifications. The designation of any class of marking shall not preclude the use of a marking of a lower class number.
Class I. Integral marking
Marking that is embossed, cast, stamped, or otherwise formed in the part. This includes markings baked into an enameled surface.CSA ANSI Z21.98 pdf download.
